The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT INVOLVING RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE 1

At about 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Sunday, October 10, 1993, a semi-trailer truck (TRI-State Motors) carrying low-level radioactive waste in Sealand containers was involved in an accident with a recreation vehicle on I-84, east of Boise, Idaho. The accident resulted in about a 3.5 hour5.787037e-5 days <br />0.00139 hours <br />8.267196e-6 weeks <br />1.9025e-6 months <br /> traffic backup on I-84. The shipment was enroute from the Wolf Creek facility to Allied Technical Group (ATG) RicrJand, Washington for super-compaction.

The activity involved in the shipment was 151 millicuries of dry active waste. The truck received extensive damage, but there was no indication of leakage of radioactive waste from any of the containers. Idaho Highway Patrol personnel responding to the accident were equipped with radiation survey meters. There were minor injuries to personnel involved in the accident. The NRC received notification of the event from the licensee at 9:32 p.m. (EDT) on October 10, 1993. The licensee does not plan to send any response personnel to the accident site. The accident appeared on local television. The licensee plans to make a press release.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Headquarter's duty officer.

The State of Idaho was contacted by Region IV, and they had been working with the highway patrol to ( sure app.oriate surveys were conducted. The State did not require any assistance froi,the NRC.
