TRANS ORTATION ACCIDENT-LOW WASTE SHIPMENT (UPDATE)

On March 4,1993, a truck shipment of Class B Low Level Waste, enroute from Fort St. Vrain to Richland, WA, was involved in an accident in Oregon. The damagcd truck was then further damaged by another truck before it could be removed from the scene. The accident occurred just south of the Washington / Oregon border on Interstate 82. No personnel injuries resulted, and the waste shipping cask was neither dislodged nor damaged. The transport trailer sustained repairable damage as a result of the second accident.

During the day on March 4 the trailer was partially repaired, and with the authorization of the state of Oregon and the Department of Transportation it was moved, under Oregon State Highway Patrol escort, north across the Columbia River and was parked at the State of Washington port of entry. Representatives of Westinghouse (SEG) from Richland maintained surveillance of the truck and its cargo at the port of entry.

Inspection of the cask restraints revealed no damage. Sufficient repairs to the transport vehicle were completed to make it road worthy and it has continued its trip to Richland.

Uid J has updated Region V and NMSS on the status of the truck. Region V has confirmed that the state of Washington has been notified. The licensee reported that Washington state officials were cognizant of the repairs and continued transport.
