MATERI'A LS TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT NEAR ENN.IS, TEXAS The fire chief of the city of Ennis, Texas (approximately 30 miles southeast of Dallas), telephoned the Region IV office at I:00 p.m. CDT to report that.a
- orange, box about the size of an' ice chest had. fallen from a truck on Interstate 45. The chief. stated that readings taken by the fire department
. personnel with their equipment indicated radiation levels of I rad per hour at 3 feet from the box. The fire chief also indicated that traffic was blocked
. off on I-45 and extended for 2 miles in either direction of-the incident site.
.He also stated that several nearby residences had been evacuated.
Region IV' notified the Texas Department of Health who dispatched a representative to the scene.
Reoion IV also' dispatched a materials inspector who reported from the scene at 3:15 p.m. that the box reportedly contained a moisture / density gauge and that .
the previously reported readings were erroneous and were expected to be no
. greater than 2 millirems per hour at 3 feet. The Texas representative had confiscated the gauge and had left the scene before the arrival of the NRC inspector. The NRC inspector observed no evidence of traffic disruptions and was informed by fire officials that no evacuations had occurred. Extent of damage to the gauge is currently unknown.

The NRC has not received media inquiries nor issued a press release.
