The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

SUBJECT:
WOLF CREEK TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION REQUIRED REACTOR SHUTDOWN DESCRIPTION:
On October 5, 2010, at approximately 9:30 a.m., CDT, the licensee completed a shutdown of Wolf Creek Generating Station, as required by its technical specifications.
On October 2, 2010, in response to indications of leakage, the licensee removed Train A of the essential service water system from service. The essential service water system provides cooling to safety related systems and components. The leak was discovered in the intake pipe that pumps water from the lake to the plant.
The licensee decided to shut down the unit because they were not able to identify and correct the leak within the required 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br /> of their technical specification limit. The redundant train of essential service water remains fully operational. Licensee actions to identify and correct the source of the leak will continue during the plant shutdown.
NRC resident inspectors monitored the activities described above. They will continue to inspect the licensee's maintenance and repair activities as well as restoration activities.
The state of Kansas has been informed. This information has been discussed with licensee management and is current as of 10:00 a.m., October 5, 2010, CDT.
