GENERALLY LICENSED GAUGE FOUND BY SCRAP METAL DEALER On October 9, 1997, Midwest Iron and Metal, a scrap metal dealer in Dayton, Ohio, reported that it had found a gauge in scrap material which appeared to contain a radiation source. The gauge was placed in a secure area at the dealer's facility, pending further action. The condition of the gauge is not known.

Based on the serial number and label on the device, it is a

generally-licensed paper thickness gauge which was originally sold in 1978 to a company in California. It contains a sealed source of about 25 millicuries (925 megabecquerels) of krypton-85. The current ownership of the gauge is unknown.

The State of Ohio will send two health physicists to the scrap dealer on October 10 to perform measurements on the gauge and assure it is properly secured.

Region.III (Chicago) is monitoring the state's inquiry. If the ownership of the gauge cannot be determined, tne matter will be forwarded to the Environmental Protect Agency under the Memoradum of Understanding between the NRC and EPA.

The discovery of the gauge was reported to Region III about 11:30 a.m.
