PLANNED RESTART DELAYED UNTIL SPRING 1998. CONTRACTORS LAID OFF On April 23. 1997 Commonwealth Edison anrounced it would delay the

)lanned startup of the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station until Spring 1998.

} )reviously the utility had planned for a Fall 1997 restart of Unit 1.

The schedule change will result in the initial laying off of about 400 l contract workers out of a contract work force of.750 currently at the i site. No Commonwealth Edison employees will be laid off as a result of the change of schedule.

Maintaining the Fall 1997 schedule would have required an approximate $50 j million increase in the station's 1997 budget, according to the utility.

The State of Illinois will be informed. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with utility management.

Commonwealth Edison issued a news release on the scheduled change.
