DAMAGED GUN SIGHTS CONTAINING TRITIUM GAS On February 27, 1997, the licensee notified Region III that two Muzzle j
l Reference Sensors (MRS's) each containing tritium gas, 10 curies (370 l
gigabecquerels), were damaged at Ft Irwin, CA, on February 21, 1997, l
during training exercises that were being conducted by a group from Ft.
Riley. The MRS's were each mounted on a tank gun tube. The tanks were positioned on a firing line and were firing rounds when the MRS's were i
damaged. One of the MRS's remained on the gun tube and contaminated the gun tube; the other MRS was exploded when the round was fired. The damaged MRS and the pieces of the exploded MRS were bagged and

controlled into radioactive waste storage. The gun tube was l
decontaminated.
Urine bioassay samples were collected from nine individuals and the j
l results are expected within 14 days. The tritium was dispersed into the.
atmosphere and the licensee does not expect intake of tritium by any of the individuals.
The licensee received the information from Ft. Irwin on February 26, 1997, and notified the NRC Operations Center and the NRC Region III office as required by 10 CFR 30.50(b)(4). Region III notified the NRC l
Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards.
