MOLYBDENUM-99/ TECHNETIUM GENERATOR EXCEEDS DOT REQUIREMENTS On December 31, 1996, the licensee notified NRC Region III (Chicago) that a package was received that day at its nuclear pharmacy in Saginaw, Michigan, which exceeded the Department of Transportation (DOT) limits of 200 millirem /hr (2 millisieverts/hr) contact dose. The reading was taken with a survey meter by the licensee on the bottom of the package and was found to be slightly in excess of the limit by a few millirem.
Leak tests performed by the licensee revealed no contamination on the package and there was no evidence that the package was damaged. The i
courier (Federal Express) and the shipper of the material (Mallinckrodt Medical) have been r'otified. The manufacturer intends to proceed with an investigation to determine the cause of the problem.
The State of Michigan and the NRC Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards have been notified. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
