Subject:

FOSSIBLE RADIOGRAPHER OVEREXPOSURE The licensee was notified by its film badge supplier that a badge worn by a radiographer during October of 1987 showed a whole body radiation dose of 5.5 rems. (The NRC whole body limit is 1.25 rems in a calendar quarter.

If the individual's radiation history is known, g

then the whole body limit could be as high as 3 remsin a calendar quarter.)

The radiographer had worn the badge while working on a pipeline project in Hazleton, PA during the month of October.

The individual had used an x-ray crawler and a control device containing 190 millicuries of cesium-137 to make x-ray photographs of pipe welds.

The control device was a Gamma Industries Master Minder Model 2.

It is used to stop the crawling movement of the x-ray unit as it proceeds down the length of the pipe.

It is not known whether the alleged overexposure is due to x-ray or gamma-ray exposure.

The film supplier (Siemens) is re-examining the badge.

Region III (Chicago) will dispatch an inspector to the licensee's Milwaukee facility on January 4, 1988, to discuss and review this event.

The States of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania will be notified.
