Subject:

SHUTDOWN DUE TO MAIN TRANSFORMER FAULT l At approximately 2:22 p.m. on August 1, 1987, the reactor scrammed as a result of turbine and generator trips after a fault occurred in the main transformer.

Following the scram, the two electrical buses supplying power to the two motordriven feedwater pumps tripped. The reactor core isolation cooling (RCIC) system did not start initially using the " fast start" procedure, but was manually started to maintain reactor i water level. A reactor feedwater pump was also started.

l One scram discharge volume drain isolation valve did not indicate fully closed after the

' scram, and the licensee is investigating the cause of this problem.

The unit is expected to be shut down for several weeks for replacement of the main i transformer.

The senior resident inspector arrived at the plant at 3 p.m. on August 2,1987, to review the circumstances of the scram. The resident inspectors will continue to monitor the licensee's evaluation of the scram and subsequent transformer replacement activities.

The State of Illinois will be informed.

The Headquarters Duty Officer was notified at 3:22 p.m. on August 1, 1987. This information is current as of 10 a.m., August 3, 1987.
