FEEDWATgCHECKVALVELEAKAGF On July 27, 1987, the licensee reduceo power to approximately two perunt to repair a feedwater check.nlyg which was leaking. Repair efforts, using a metallic sealant (Furmanite),

The leakage resumed, however, and the licensee commenced a reactor shutdown from three percent pcwer because the leakage (4.2 liters per minute) exceeded Technical Specification limits.

(The check valve, which is locatd in the reactor building steam tunnel, is part of the reactorcoolantsystempressureboundary.)

During the shutdown, the reactor scramed as a result of feedwater flow variations while reactor power and pressure were being reduced.

Because of the required shutdown.the licensee declared an Unusual Event under its emergency plan. Appropriate governmental notifications were made.

C The licensee is reviewing possible repair options for the leaking valve. The resident

inspectors will monitor the repair activities. An Operational Safety Team member was on

The State of Michigan will be notified.

There has been local news media interest in the shutdown.
