POSSIBLE THEFT OF LICENSED MATERIAL - - - (UPDATE)

On January 12, 1987, Region III (Chicago) obtained additional information on the apparent theft of two vials labelled as containing iodine-125.

According to the St. Louis County Police, the individual arrested on January 8 in possession of tha vials stated that the vials were obtained from the Veterans Administration Jefferson Barracks Hospital on January 6, 1987. He also stated that he did not open the vials or obtain any other radioactive material.

Mallinckrodt, Inc., reported that the vials are from kits it distributes for invitro diagnostic medical tests. At.the time of distribution each vial contained less than 10 microcuries of iodins-125. Mallinckrodt assayed the two vials recovered from the individual's home and found that each contained less than 0.01 microcuries of iodine-125. (This quantity is exempt from NRC regulations and would not represent a significant hazard to a person possessing it.)

The Veterans Administration is investigating the incident and will provide a report to Regicn III when it is completed. The preliminary findings indicate that no additional radioactive material is missing from the facility and that the individual involved had been-a construction worker at a hospital facility.

Region III is monitoring the Veterans Administration review and coordinating NRC activities with the U.S. Attorney's Office in St. Louis.

There has been local news media interest. Region III is responding to news media inquires.

Tha State of Missouri will be informed of this updated information.
