FEEDWATER PUNP' SEAL LEAK At about 5:00 a.m. Mn D9cy yy 1J 486, a seal on the motor-driven feedwater pump failed while the pump was being startedk3ausing a leak of about 200 gallons er minute.
Approximately 3,000 to 6,000 gallons of water and steam sprayed into t e pump room in the turbine building. The licensee had some difficulty in isolating the leak because of steam and water in the pump room. All water drained to the radioactive waste water treatment system, but there was some residual radioactive contamination in the area of the pump.
Decontamination activities are underway.
i There was no personnel contamination or injury.
The plant was operating at 75 per cent power at the time of the incident, and the unit remained in operation.
The State of Illinois will be notified.
Region 111 (Chicago)(was notified of the incident by the Resident inspector at 9:00 a.m.,
December 17, 1986.
