EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS RESULTISG IN PLANT SH1'TDOWN IN EXCESS OF -

On November 3, 1980, Quad Cities Unit 2 was shutdown due to an apparent high temperature c,n the 23 Recirculation Pump. The licensee deinerted the drywell for visual inspection of the recirculation pump.

Further investigation by the licensee rerealed that the high temperature was the result of water spraying on the pump's theraccouples frcm a leak on the recirculation pump suction valve bonnet.

Repairs to the suction valve bonnet are expected to be completed on November 6,1980.

The unit is expected to be returned to service on November 7, 1980.

The resident inspector is following up on the licensee's plan for repairing the valve bonnet leak.

Neither the licensee nor Region III are planning a press. release at this time.

T'.e State of Illinois is being notified.
