REPORT OF ACCIDENT OF VEHICLE CARRYING BYPRODUCT MATERIAL Region III (Chicago) was informed on July 15, 1980 that a Pharmatopes van trans-porting two attache cases containing used technetium-99m syringes and a syringe containing 5 mil 11 curies of technetium-99m Human Albumin Microspheres, was involved in a collision with another vehicle in Massillon, OH (approximately 15 miles south of Akron, OH) on July 15, 1980. The attache cases were thrown out of the van by an ambulance driver when he assisted the injured Pharmatopes, Inc. driver.

The Chief from Perry Township Fire Department and a nuclear medicine technologist from Doctors Hospital in Massillon, OH responded to the accident. The syringes had fallen out of the attache cases; however, each syringe was in a lead shielded container. The lead shielded containers were intact.

Shielded syringe containers were placed in attache cases and secured in the hot -laboratory of the nuclear medicine department at Doctors Hospital in Massilon OH.

G.M. surveys and wipe tests were performed by the nuclear medicins technologist from Doctors Hospital, and no apparent contamination was found on the attache cases.

G.M. surveys also indicated no apparent contamination was found on the van or the driver.

A representative from the Ohio Disaster Services Agency was sent to the scene of the accident and he accepted the assessment performed by the hospital.

No press interest was noted. Neither the licensee nor Region III plans a press release.
