ALLEGED OVEREXPOSURE TO RADIOGRAPHER On June 12, 1980 a radiographer performing radiography at the Consumers Power Company fossil fuel generating station in Overisel. MI re.ceived an estimated 7.650 rems whole

body exposure as measured by thermoluminesceht. dosimeter. The radioFraphy device 1

used contained 55 curies of iridium-192.

Cause of the expocure is thought to have resulted from the source not being fully retracted into the cadera when film changes were made.

The exposure was suspected when the radiographer's 200 mR dosimeter was offscele.

Yl.. licensee will conduct a reenactment of the incident to evaluate the exposure next week.

NRC, Region III (Chicago), will investigate the incident.

There has beer. no news media interest at this time. Neither the licensee nor Region III plans a press release; however, Region III will respond to any inquiries.

2 T1.e State of Michigan Public Health Department has been notified by the licensee.

NRC, Region III, will confirm thic notification.

Region III received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a licensee representative at 10:45 a.m. CDT, June 13, 1980.
