The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

PACKAGE CONTAINING ONE MICR0 CURIE OF IODINE-125 CRUSHED AT O' HARE AIRPORT Region III (Chicago) was informed that a package containing one microcurie of iodine-125 in a radioimmunoassay kit was crushed at the Northwest Airlines f reight terminal at the O' Hare Airport during the evening of June 4,1980.

The package being shipped by Abbott Laboratories was part of a shipment of four pieces, the others being undamaged.

About six vials were crushed and liquid got on the hands and face of one individual and the leg and hands of another.

The initial report ir.dicated that a larger quan-tity of radioactive material was involved and the individuals and the area were cont ami nated.

l Region III inspectors, the State of Illinois officials and Abbott Laboratories responded to the incident.

The area was cleaned and no activity was detected in the area or on the individuals' skin. Apparently vials with nonradioactive material were crushed.

l Media interest is not expected.

Region III was notified of the incident at 10:10 p.m. CDT on June 4,1980, by the

,l Headquarters Duty Of ficer.

No further action is planned.
