SUBJECT:
UPDATE - CLINTON POWER STATION UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS DESCRIPTION:
At 0537 (CDT) on October 15, 2009, Clinton Power Station experienced a trip of the B reactor recirculation pump. Due to the pump trip, reactor water level rose above 48 inches, at which point licensed operators manually scrammed the reactor in accordance with their operating procedures. All safety-related systems functioned as required. Due to the manual shutdown, reactor water level did not reach the high-level automatic scram set point of 52 inches.
Immediately following the shutdown, the licensee discovered that two ground fault relays actuated, causing both breakers supplying power for high speed operation to the B reactor recirculation pump to open. The licensee subsequently tested the B reactor recirculation pump motor and power cabling, verifying that a hard ground existed on the motor.
On October 24, 2009, the Unit was restarted and later synched to the grid following the motor replacement. The Unit is expected to be returned to full power by October 26, 2009.
