SUBJECT:

KEWAUNEE REACTOR SHUTDOWN DESCRIPTION:

On Tuesday, February 27, 2007, the Kewaunee Power Station was at about 100 percent power and operators had just begun a routine test of one of four nuclear power measuring instruments when an automatic reactor trip occurred. All plant equipment responded as designed to the trip except for one valve associated with the main turbine. However, operators promptly closed the valve manually before any significant complications with stabilizing the reactor occurred. The NRC senior resident inspector responded to the plant after the reactor trip and observed the licensees initial followup activities. A similar test of one of the other three instruments had been completed without incident earlier that day.

The licensee is completing troubleshooting activities and will make any necessary repairs prior to restarting the reactor.

The NRC resident inspectors are observing the licensees activities.

The State of Wisconsin will be notified.

This information is current as of 12:00 p.m. on March 1, 2007.

The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with license management.
