AUTOMATIC REACTOR SHUTDOWN DESCRIPTION:
At 10:24 a.m. EDT on August 4, 2004, the reactor shut down automatically during a quarterly surveillance test on one of four reactor trip circuit breakers. All safety systems functioned as designed, and the plant staff responded appropriately.
The licensee is investigating the cause of the reactor shutdown.
The NRC resident inspectors were on site at the time of the reactor shutdown and are continuing to monitor the licensees response to the event.
The State of Ohio and Ottawa County have been notified. Region III (Chicago) has been responding to news media inquiries. Two staff members of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works were touring the plant at the time of the reactor trip.
The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
Region III was notified of the reactor trip about 10:40 a.m EDT. This information is current as of 3 p.m. EDT on August 4, 2004.
