THEFT OF TRITIUM-ILLUMINATED EXIT SIGNS l l

On October 7, 1999, the West Virginia' University Radiation Safety Office i notified the Headquarters Operations Center of the probable theft of six generally licensed tritium-activated exit signs. Each of the exit signs contained between 10 and 20 curies of tritium (hydrogen 3). The signs were installed in the Evansdale Campus Creative Arts Center located in E3rgantown, West Virginia.

The devices were first discovered missing on October 4, 1999 by West Virginia University staff. The radiation safety officer (RSO) was nouified of the missing licensed materials on October 6, 1999. The licensee is attempting to determine the manufacturer and model of the missing devices and the quantity of licensed material that the devices I contained. The RSO notified the campus police department of the missing licensed materials. An intact device does not pose an external radiation hazard.

The licensee is also preparing a press release describing the devices; advising the public that they contain radioactive materials; and, that the devices should not be opened. The press release will ask that any persons having information about the missing devices contact the

. Radiation Safety Office or civil authorities.
