RAIL CAR CONTAINING SCRAP ACTIVATES RADIATION MONITOR On May 30, 1997, officials of the State of Tennessee advised the Regional office that a rail car containing finely shredded scrap material r

activated the licensee's radiation monitor used to survey incoming shipments.

Subsequent to the monitor being activated, the licensee initiated a survey with hand held instrumentation. Radioactivity has been determined l to be located toward one end and side of the railcar. At a distance of l five feet from the source of activity, the instrumentation pegged on the

5,000 microR/ hour scale, i The rail car has been isolated on site, and the licensee is attempting to

' ascertain its origin. I Three State inspectors were' dispatched from the Nashville, TN office and  ;

are expected to be on site at approximately 4:00 p.m. CDT today.

No media interest has been expressed.

The Region was notified of this event by officials of the State of i

Tennessee, at 2:00 p.m., EDT, on May 30, 1997. i Technical assistance was offered to the State, but declined.

The region will monitor the activities of the State.
