UPDATE OF REPORTED RADIATION OVEREXPOSURE TO TECHNICIAN'S HAND This is an update to the PN issued on November 8, 1996, which discussed the reported hand overexposure to a technician from routinely touching a source in a portable density gauge.
An Augmented Inspection Team (AIT) was established on November 12, 1996, and began the onsite inspection on November 13.
On November 14, the AIT will observe a reenactment, by the technician, of the events that lead to the potential overexposure using a similar gauge, without the radioactive source, to better define the total exposure time.
The AIT will continue inspection at the Bristol facility through November 15, with an exit interview (open to the public) scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
followed by a press briefing by the AIT team leader.
In addition to the AIT inspection at the Bristol facility, the AIT will inspect three other PSI, Inc. facilities next week to determine whether there are issues generic to other PSI facilities.
I On November 12, the licensee was informed by the film badge vendor that the technician's whole body film badge for the period of August 25 -
November 1, 1996, had a reading of 12.170 rem. The film badge vendor is continuing to evaluate the film to further characterize the type.of radiation the badge was exposed to and under what condition the badge was exposed.
The licensee has arranged for the gauge to be evaluated by the manufacturer in California.
An AIT team member will observe this evaluation.
A representative of the State of California, which licenses the manufacturer, will also observe this evaluation.
