Subject:

DERAILMENT OF PADUCAH AND LOUISVILLE RAILWAY, INC. TRAIN At approximately 8:06 am, on November 3, 1993, a Paducah and Louisville Railway, Inc., train derailed at the St. Andrews Church Road crossing in the Pleasure Ridge Park area in Jefferson County near Louisville, Kentucky. Two of the boxcars, numbers 33 and 34, included in the train contained Uranium Hexafluoride (UF6). The two cars which contained the UF6 were not derailed as a result of the accident and were removed from the accident scene and continued on to their destination. Personnel from the Kentucky Disaster and Emergency Services agency on the scene of the derailment reported that no material had leaked from the two boxcars that contained the UF6.

Hazardous materials such as hydrogen fluoride and vinyl chloride were contained in some of the six rail cars that did derail, but personnel at the scene reported that none of the rail cars appeared to be leaking their contents. As a precautionary measure, personnel living within a one mile radius of the accident scene were evacuated.

There has been local news media interest.

Region II will continue to discuss the event with the State.
