CONTAMINATED DUST AT STEEL MILL The Commonwealth of Kentuckj notified the Region II Agreement State Officer that a cesium-137 source had been melted at the Newport Steel facility in Newport, Kentucky. Kentucky was notified on Friday afternoon, July 30, 1993, that a trailer loaded with " bag-house" dust set off the radiation detectors while leaving the facility.

The State Radiation Control Program sent an inspector to the site on Friday afternoon to conduct surveys. The bag-house and the trailer were confirmed to be contaminated with cesium-137. Based upon a State analysis, the amount of radioactive material was estimated to be approximately 200 millicuries.

Newport Steel has acquired the decontamination services of SEG from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. SEG personnel are reported to be on site. The mill has been shut down pending decontamination, and all radioactive materials have been confined to the site.

This mill had a similar event on April 29, 1992.
