The information is as initially received without verification cr evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

OVEREXPOSURE TO RADIOGRAPHERS'S THUMB The licensee has reported that an estimated overexposure of 180-rem to the left thumb of a radiographer which occurred on the evening of Thursday, January 8. The radiographer was preparing to move his equipment to another location and believed that he had retracted the source.

He repositioned the guide tube for another exposure and did not realize that the source was fully extended.

Th licensee has removed the employee from further radiation work, and the NRC has been cdvised that a medical examination has thus far revealed no apparent adverse effects.

All radiographers have been reinstructed to properly survey each completed exposure.

NRC inspector from the Region II office will conduct a review of the event at the site.

The NRC is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.

The NRC (Region II) received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee at 10:00 a.m. (EST) on January 9.
