REACTOR SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS The licensee shut down Seabrook Station on November 12, 1998, after a visual inspection indicated damage to the main generator "A" phase output bus. The bus degradation was detected during a routine predictive maintenance activity, which identified elevated temperatures external to i the bus'ductwork. The damage occurred on the ductwork and the flexible connections to the input of the generator step-up (GsU) transformer. This transformer and bus also serve as one of the offsite power sources. The

. operators are in the process of placing the unit in the cold shutdown condition per the facility Technical Specification. The second offsite power supply and both emergency diesel generators are available. The t licensee formed an event team to determine the probable cause for the

. damage and to supervise the bus repairs. A one-week outage is planned to troubleshoot and repair the bus ductwork. -

The resident inspector observed portions of the plant shutdown and {

initial visual inspections of the bus ductwork. i i

The licensee did not issue a press release but did inform several members of the media.

Th~e state of New Hampshire and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have been notified.
