@bject: LOSS OR THEFT OF A PORTABLE GAUGE bout 10:00 a.m. on July 8,1998, the President of Materials Testing Lab.-

ac, called the NRC Region I office to inform the NRC of a lost or stolen

@uge. The missing gauge is a Troxler Electronics Laboratories Model 611-B portable moisture density gauge SN 4259 and contains sealed curces of cesium-137. (about 8 millicuries) and americium-241 (about 44

$111 curies). The radiation levels at the surface of the gauge with the

@aled sources in the shielded position range from 2 millirem per hour to

>nillirem per hour.

Re licensee determined that.the gauge was.not in secure storage at their

@nnecticut office on July 6,1998 during the normal inventory process.

Re licensee contacted all of its managers at active jobsites, I aterviewed personnel, and contacted its branch offices in New Jersey,

@nnecticut and Delaware concerning the gauge. The licensee also sntacted the manufacturer. The gauge was last logged out on May 29,

$98 from the Connecticut branch office, used at a temporary jobsite in Ernecticut and logged back in at the Connecticut branch office by an sthorized user. The authorized user is no longer employed by the tcensee and the licensee is attempting to contact the former employee, he licensee has contacted the local Connecticut police and informed the Psgion I staff that it will issue a press release in Connecticut.

sRegion I inspector will follow up on this event at the New York and the ernecticut branch offices.
