UNPLANNED REACTOR SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS On June 22, 1998 at 10:40 a.m. an orderly shut down of Susquehanna Unit 2 was initiated to repair a small leak on a flow element in the. condensate filtration system.
On 'June 20, 1998 the licensee identified minor leakage from a 1/2 inch crack in an end cap weld on a flow element in the condensate system.
The initial leakage rate on June 20, 1998 was measured at approximately 0.125 gallons per minute (gpm).
Over a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
period, the crack indication wa~ observed to increase to'pproximately 3/4 inch and the leakage incieased to approximately 0.2 gpm.
Based on the increasing crack size, the licensee initiated the shut down of Unit 2.
The licensee continues to assess the root cause of the failed weld.
The unit expects to be out of service for about 5 days.
The licensee will also complete repairs to a main steam safety relief valve acoustic monitor, which was the subject of a Notice of Enforcement Discretion issued on June 15, 1998.
This shutdown was not required by plant Technical Specifications.
The licensee has issued a press release.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed of the information contained in this PN.

The information in'this notification is current as of 9:30 a.m. on June 23, 1998.
