TRITIUM SIGN AT A PRIVATE RESIDENCE A generally-licensed device containing tritium has been retrieved, undamaged, from a private residence.

On Monday, March 16, 1998, at 8:30 a.m.,

the NRC Region I office was notified by an individual that his son, a 15 year old, had found a ag:.owing sign" approximately two months ago, in a trash dumpster at the rcnovation site of the Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania.

The individual became concerned on March 15, 1998, after reading.an article in a local newspaper regarding materials found during rcnovation projects, and removed the sign which had been at the head of his con's bed. He placed the sign in a locked shed on his property.

The individual stated that the sign did not appear broken or damaged.

R;gion I contacted the Pennsylvania Bureau of Radiation Protection (PADEP), Department of Environmental Protection, who dispatched two incpactors to the site.

The sign was retrieved by the inspectors and tran: ported to the PADEP office.

Markings on the sign indicated that it contained approximately 20 curies of tritium.

Wipe tests indicate no leaktge from the sign.

Rtgion I will notify the general licensee of their responsibility to retrieve the sign.

The Region I Office of Public Affairs is available to respond to media inquiries.
