The sources had been removed from gunsight alignment devices and were

!, presumed stolen. At 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 1997 Region I inspectors conducting an inspection at the Letterkenny Army Depot in renponse to the report were notified that an individual admitted taking the sources.

The individual had taken the sources and installed them as surjlemental lighting outdoors at the individual's home. The individual broke one source at the home. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) personnel retrieved the remaining six sources from the private residence on Wednesday evening, September 3, and performed surveys of the property and the home.

Removable contamination (300 disintegrations per minute per hundred square centimeters (dpm/cm2) was identified on only one outside step at the home. NRC permits release of facilities at 5,000 dpm/100 cm2 for tratium contamination. Two samples of soil and two samples of water from a decorative lily pond were also collected by DLA personnel. A bioassay sample was also collected from the individual on Wednesday afternoon.

The licensee will determine if additional actions are necessary when the results of the analyses of samples are available for review, which is expected to be by Friday, September 5.

Rcgion I will continue to review the licensee's activities in response to this event.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. The Region I Public Affairs Office is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
