STOLEN / LOST PORTABLE NUCLEAR DENSITY GAUGE At 9:45 a.m. on August 25,1993, NRC Region I was notified by Ground Engineering and Testing Service, Inc., an Agreement State licensee working under recipmcity, that a nuclear density gauge was stolen from a trailer at a temporary job site at the Bradford Town Plaza in Wysox, Pennsylvania. The contmetor for the job site is Hoar Construction. The gauge was stolen sometime between 5:00 p.m.,

August 24 and 7:00 a.m., August 25.1993. The ponable nuclear density gauge was a Campbell Pacific Nuclear (CPN). Model MC-3. containing two sealed sources consisting of 10 millicuries of cesium-137 l

enclosed on the end of an extendable rod and 50 millicuries of americium-241 enclosed on the bottom of the device. The gauge and the transportation case are omnge in color. The gauge measures approximately 14" x 9.5" x 24" and weighs chout 30 pounds. With the gauge in its transportation case, the radiation dose rate is less than 10 millirem /hr on the surface of the case. The maximum surface dose rate on the gauge is 50 millirem /hr. Both the gauge and the case were reported to have been locked at the time of the theft, as were the storage closet and trailer. The Pennsylvania State Police have been notified. NRC Region I will follow this event.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of Alabama and NRC Region II were notified by Region I. In addition. Region I has issued a press release.
