ut containers marked with radioactive material caution signs were found at the site of the demolition of a building formerly known as the University Medical Center (a current NRC license holder).
An inspector was dispatched to the site on March 7, 1990 to investigate this report.
The inspector found a number of sealed sources of radioactive material.
One barium-133 source and two cesium-137 'ources were NRC licensed material.
Three sealed sources were labeled as cobalt-57, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania licensed material.
The inspector also identified a pile of trash and debris which measured approximately 0.1 milliroentgen per hour at three feet.
It is unknown at this time whether the pile of trash is contaminated or contains additional sealed sources Ine licensee filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 on January 1, 1988.
In a letter dated July 19, 1988, the licensee informed the Region I office of this situation, and stated that no radioactive material was en the premises.
The licensee has agreed to cease demolition in the former nuclear medicine department areas, and post a security guard on the property until the radioactive material is removed.
