KEVEX X-RAY SOURCE FOUND IN FUBLIC DOMAIN On February 28, 1990, a representative of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Bureau of Radiation Protection notified NRC Region I that an unknown individual'had left a box at the United Steel Worker (USW) union hall in Farrell, Pennsylvania. When the box was opened at the USW union hall, it was noted that it contained a device marked
" Radioactive". The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Bureau of Radiation Protection responded by sending a Health Physicist to the USW union hall. The Commonwealth Health Physicist discovered that the device in the box was a Kevex florescence analyzer x-ray source containing 20 millicuries of Cd-109 and 20 millicuries of Am-241 in the form of sealed sources (serial number 673). The Commonwealth representative also stated that the analyzer was left by a man who said that he got it from a warehouse in Sharon, PA.
The Commonwealth representative stated that the device was found to be intact in its i
shielded configuration with no apparent exposure to general members of the public.

The Bureau of Radiation Protection will store the device until the licensed owner is l
identified. The device will be returned to the licensee.
NRC Region I is pursuing the-identification of the licensee.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was notified of this event.
