UNSCHEDULED PLANT SHUTDOWN r
The licensee commenced a shutdown of Calvert Cliffs, Unit 1, at approximately midnight on November 5, 1987 as a result of degraded conditions in both steam-driven auxiliary feedwater pumps.
The No.12 auxiliary feedwater pump (No.12 AFWP) was determined to be in a degraded, but operable, condition on October 30, 1987.
NRC agreed to continued operation of the Unit based on licensee compensatory commitments accepted by NRC in Confirmatory Action Letter 87-15, issued November 2, 1987.
Subsequently, on November 3,1987, the No.11 AFWP was declared inoperable and, following three days of unsuccessful testing of the No,11 steam-driven AFWP, the licensee initiated a controlled shutdown of Unit 1.
This action precedes, by about one day, the licensee's commitment as documented in the Confirmatory Action Letter to shut down tha unit if No. 12 AFWP reliability was not significantly improved.
l The plant is expected to be shutdown by 5:00 p.m., November 5, 1987.
The duration of the shutdown to restore both pumps to an operable condition is unknown.
