TRAILER FIRE INVOLVING MAGNESIUM-THORIUM CHIPS Region I received notification on June 1,1987 of a fire that occurred at the Butkin Pr: cision Manufacturing, Inc. facility in Milford, Connecticut, on May 31, 1987. The fire involved a trailer that contained 13 to 14 sealed 55 gallon drums, 7 of which are th:ught to have contained magnesium-thorium chips. The thorium concentration may be as

-high as 4%.

Th2 licensee is conducting radiological surveys to determine the extent of any contamination, and has engaged a consultant to conduct radiological analysis and evaluation of the impact of the fire on property and personnel. Region I plans to dispatch a health physicist on June 2, 1987, to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and perform independent measurements. '

R:gion I learned of this event from a media inquiry. Consequently, the Region I Public Affairs Officer is prepared to respond to media inquiries. The State of Connecticut has been informed.
