WATER LEAKAGE INTO RADICACTIVE WASTE COMPACTION / CONSOLIDATION AREA On August 6,1986, about 1:00 a.m., a drain backed up in the basement of the Medical Education Building at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This resulted in water rising above the basement floor level and exiting under the door of the University's radioactive waste compaction / consolidation area. University radiation safety staff responded and found that no radioactive material was released. All waste presently stored in this area contains only low concentrations of radioactive material and most is contained in metal 5 gallon cans or 55 gallon drums. One fiber box of liquid scintillation vials was slightly damaged. University health physicists are continuing their review and measurements and Region I personnel are discussing the results of their surveys with them.

Th2 occurrence has been reported in the local media, including the fact that there was no release of radioactive material.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.
