Associates of Alexandria, VA Notification of Unusual Event L/N 45-15234-01 Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable

Subject:

DAMAGE OF TROXLER GAUGE AT CONSTRUCTION SITE At approximately 2:30 p.m. on April 30, 1983, the Regional Manager of Ambric (Philadelphia) contacted the Region I Duty Officer and advised that one of their Troxler Gauges (Model No.

34-11-B) containing approximately 40 millicuries of Americium-241 had been damaged at an E.I.

duPont construction site near Wilmington, Delaware. A backhoe operator had accidently cracked the case of the gauge by striking it with the bucket of the backhoe. The licensee immediately roped off the area. A Region I inspector was dispatched and arrived at the site at approximately 6:00 p.m. The gauge as well as the immediate vicinity was surveyed. Normal radiation levels for this gauge were found and there was no evidence of removable contam-ination, but wipes were taken and are currently being analyzed in the Region I laboratory.

Th2 licensee has packaged the gauge for shipment back to the Troxler company for examination and repair.

The State of Delaware and NRC Region II have been notified. Neither the licensee nor Region I plans a press release and media interest is not expected.
