Subject:

On September 30, 1981 the licensee reported to Region I that a contractor employee may have received an overexposure while performing maintenance on a Ohmart gauge containing approximately 800 millicuries of cesium-137.

The individual had been working on the gauge for approximately one-half hour when the licensee's Radiation Safety Officar performed a radiation survey which found elevated radiation levels in the work are The RS0 measured radiation levels of approximately one rem per hour at one foot from

..e gauge while the individual was working approximately six inches from the gauge.

The licensee's initial estimate for the individual's whole body dose is 3.36 rem.

The individual's film badge is being processed and a result is expected shortly.

The regional office has dispatched two inspectors who began.an inspection on October 1, 1981. The company which supplied the gauge is sending an employee to help the licensee discover the cause of the elevated radiation levels and take necessary remedial action.

The licensee postulates that the lead shielding in the gauge may have been damaged by high temperatures which periodically occur in the area.

Currently, the area around the source is secured by the licensee to prevent further exposures.

There has been no media interest. No press release is planned by the NRC or the licensee at this time. The State of New Jersey has been notified.

Region I received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the licensee at 4:00 p.m. on,Septyi5e 3 1981 h.
