STOLEN RADIOGRAPHY SOURCE About 2:50 p.m. on September 18, 1981, a former employee of the licensee returned to the licensee's office to pick up some insurance forms and left. The employee had been laid off about two weeks previously and was reportedly unhappy with the company. About 3:30 p.m. the licensee discovered that an Iriditron-100 projector containing 65 curies of iridium-192 was missing.

The projector was definitely known to have been in the storage cabinet at 2:45 p.m.

The NRC, police and local news organizations were immediately notified and a search initiated. The police contacted the former employee by phone and he denied removing the source. About 1:20 a.m. co September 18, 1981, the projector was found by a security guard in a nea.by' building under construction.

The projector was intact and did not appear to have been tampered with. The police investigation is continuing. A special inspection to r9 view this occurrence will be scheduled within two weeks.

Region I received notification of this occurrence at about 5:50 p.m. on September 17, 1981 from the Headquarters Duty Officer. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been inforined.

Region I is responding to news media inquiries, but a press release is not planned.
