Subject:
REACTOR WATER CLEANUP SYSTEM LEAKAGE While conducting routine surveillance for leakage on December 29, 1980, two thru-wall cracks were found in a five foot straight section of four inch cleanup system (RWCU) piping located outside the drywell in the reactor building and external to the pressure boundary between the regenerative and non-regenerative heat exchangers.
The cracks are not located in the heat affected zone of a pipe weld.
The RWCU has been isolated and the plant is being held at 25 percent power pending repair of this piping.
The licensee plans to replace the piping section.
In service inspections of this system during a recent refueling outage had also disclosed a number of defects in piping located inside the drywell.
The resident inspectors are following licensee actions and monitoring the repairs.
Reactor water conductivity is being maintained well below Technical Specification limits.
This PN is issued for information only.
IE followup actions will be as stated above and documented in routine reports.
Media interest is possible because of sensitivity to nuclear power issues at this site. The State of Vermont has been notified.
