TO BARNWELL, SOUTH CAROLINA FOR BURIAL UNC Recovery Systems received an allocation of burial space for December 1980

from the State of South Carolina.

On December 10,11,12, and 15,1980, Region I performed an inspection of the i

packaging of this waste for shipment and burial. A representative of the Rhode Island Department of Health was present during part of this inspection.

The licensee prepared sixty-one drums and sixteen boxes of waste. These packages i

contained no lagoon or yard waste. The inspector verified by inspecting the 1

contents and closure of selected packages that the packages contained no liquids and that the licensee had packaged the material in accordance with the quality assurance programs and implementing procedures in effect at the time of packaging.

On December 16, 1980, on the basis of the above inspection, Region I considered these specific packages to be proper for shipment and burial.

The licensee, the j

i State of Rhode Island and the State of South Carolina were informed of that consideration.

I The licensee made one shipment on December 17 and two shipments on December 19.

The first shipment arrived at the burial site and was buried on December 19.

The second shipment arrived and was buried on December 22.

The third shipment arrived on December 22 and will be buried on December 23.

No problems were r

encountered by the burial ground operators with these packages.

The State of Rhode Island provided the press with the information concerning the 4

permission to ship the waste.

Region I did not and does not plan to issue a press release on this subject, but will respond to inquiries.
