ALERT DECLARED DUE TO CARBON DIOXIDE LEAK FROM A PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN THE DIESEL GENERATOR BUILDING On August 8, 2007, at 3:36 p.m., Exelon declared an Alert at Peach Bottom Unit 2 and 3, due to a leak on a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher in the E-3 Diesel Generator Room. Since the concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen were not known, the room was evacuated and an Alert was declared due to the potential for a hazardous atmosphere to exist. The E-3 diesel generator was unaffected by the event and remained available if needed. There were no personnel injuries reported. Peach Bottom Units 2 and 3 remained at 100% and 99% power, respectively, throughout the event.
At 4:53 p.m. Exelon exited the Alert due to verification that the EDG rooms atmosphere was safe for access.
The NRC resident inspectors were onsite and responded to the main control room to monitor and evaluate plant safety performance. NRC Region I, in King of Prussia, PA, contacted the appropriate Pennsylvania and Maryland emergency management agencies, and the Region I Public Affairs Office responded to media inquiries.
The information presented herein has been discussed with Exelon and is current as of August 8, at 6:00 p.m.
