DATA SUMMARIES OF LICENSEE EVENT REPORTS OF PUMPS AT U.S. COMMERCIAL NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS JANUARY 1, 1972 TO APRIL 30, 1978 NUREG/CR 1205 (EGG-EA-5044)
Triggered by the.recent failures of HPCI and RCIC at Hatch I (PNO-IIsil7 June 26, 1980), I examined an LER search I had made in 1977 on RCIC and HPCI, and compared them with the' data appearing in the subject report.
My search of the LER files turned up 9 HPCI and RCIC failures at Hatch I s
during the years 1975 and 1976. i.e.,

In contrast, the subject report turned up 8 pump failures at Hatch I during the same two years - of which only 1 was a HPCI or RCIC failure, namely LER 75-55.(7/5/75). The 7 other pump failures listed for Hatch I in the subject report for the years.1975 and 1976 are attributed to other systems - (RHR,.
service water, stack sampling).
. Discussion with R.'Dennig of your staff on 7/3/80 confirmed the fact that 8 Hatch I HPCI and RCIC failures for 1975-1976 revealed by my LER search were 8210120099 800710 PDR ADOCK 05000321 P

j For the subject report', the contractor (EG & G) used LERs which were re -
trieved by an NRC computer search which only used the component code " PUMPS" and the textural term " PUMP" (subject report page 1). This retrieval strategy seems to be the reason why NUREG/CR 1205 missed 8 of the 9 events that I retrieved. The 8 LERs that NUREG/CR 1205 missed have the words HPCI, RCIC; Reactor Core Isolation Cooling, etc. in the text and the component code;
.whereas the words " PUMP" or " PUMPS" do not appear in the text or cpmponent codes,.~ ~J. J '_.
Extrapolating this experience, it is quite likely that the subject report has missed a significant amount.cf failure data on RCIC and HPCI (" standby-turbine pumps") at other plants.
Similarly, it is not clear whether-or not failure data for the turbibe ' driven auxiliary feedwater systems were omitted.from the subject study due to the narrow LER search strategy that was used.
It is reccarended that PAS take appropriate action to correct the afore-mentioned deficiencies, and also take action to assure that the ongoing LER studies do not contain the same error.
