HEW DATA SHOWING HIGHER RADOM EMISSIONS FROM UMDERgRCUND MI?;ING Enclosed is a letter from Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories advising that their latest data show radon emissions of 6000 Ci/RRY from underground mines ccmpared to 3700 Ci/RRY given in the revisc.d report (SUREG/CR-0627) thtt "rjust received from them. The increase stems mainly from icwcr output of U 033 frca the mines (few?r RRY supplied by the mine) with no decrease in the concentration of radon in the ventilation air exhausted frca the miacs. Since the data represent the average of 27 mines producing about 605 of the total U.S. out::ut frca undergrot:::d mines, an! since we seek to maintain conservatism in our estimates, we probably should use the higher value for our radon rulemaking.

Using the high2r estimate for underground nines would cause the Table 5-3 radca value to increase by 34%, as shown by the ;;.arginal notes on the enclosed letter.

Battelle says they will have the draft re;crt on these measurements rea t for NRC review in mid-December. We are nearly ready to send out for URC inurnal review the draft radon report which would provide the technical basis for rula-making on the radon value in Table S-3.

It is rccommended that the racon report be issued as planned #or NRC' internal review with a transmittal letter requesting review for form and content, noting that recent data indicate a possible need to revise upward the raden release estinates, and advising the reviewers that when the Battelle report on the new data is received such revisions as are necassary will be mada.

In this way t e could gain th 3 benefit of the NRC internal review with no delay, and by the time the review period is over, we should be ready to incorporate the revised estimates before publishing the final report.
