Dear Mr. Brubaker:
Your letter of August 27, 1981 inquired about the status of certain safety improvements at Three Mile Island Unit No. 2.
Because Three Mile Island Unit No. 2 is shutdown, and will probably remain shutdown for a considerable time, please provide further clarification as to the nature and relevance of the information you desire.
You also asked about the damage to the Northern California nuclear power station from the earthquake which " knocked out some freeway ramps." I believe you are referring to the effects of the November 8,1980 earthquake on the Humboldt Bay Power Plant which has been shutdown for more than five years. The damage was minimal. For your infomation I have enclosed a report which describes and shows pictures of the damage.
v In addition, you had a suggestion related to the use of reactor waste heat for distillation of alcohol fuel. This suggestion is not within the area of responsibility of the Nuclear Regulatory Connission. You may wish to further discuss your suggestion with the Department of Energy, Forrestal Building,1000 Independence Avenue, SW., Washington, D.C.
