CHAIRMAN October 7, 1988 4

Mr. Alexander Protsenko Chairman U.S.S.R. State Committee for the Utilization of Atomic Energy

Dear Mr. Protsenko:

I appreciated the opportunity to meet with you in Vienna and was most interested ir. the information which you provided on the fire at Ignalina.

As I mentioned, NRC has a large body of information on the major fire that occurred in 1975 at a U.S. commercial f acility, the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

I have enclosed three documents concerning the 1975 fire that I believe may be of interest to you.

These documents will provide you with a good overview of our experience with a significant fire that resulted in spurious component opera tion, loss of control functions, and erroneous control room instrumentation readings.

I hope that this information will be helpful to you.

Sincerely, N* W Lando W. Zec i Jr.
