Comment on the Restart of Palisades Reactor**
- To: U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)**
- From: American Nuclear Activist Alliance (ANAA)**
- Date: August 12, 2024**
Dear NRC Commissioners,
The American Nuclear Activist Alliance (ANAA) submits this comment to express our concerns regarding the proposed restart of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant. We believe that the restart of this facility poses significant risks to public health, safety, and the environment.
- 1. Safety Concerns:**
The Palisades reactor has a history of safety issues, including multiple unplanned shutdowns, equipment failures, and radiation leaks. These incidents have raised serious questions about the plant's operational integrity and the ability of its management to ensure safe operations. Restarting the reactor without addressing these underlying issues could lead to catastrophic consequences.
- 2. Aging Infrastructure:**
The Palisades plant is one of the oldest nuclear reactors in the United States, having been in operation since 1971. The aging infrastructure of the plant increases the likelihood of mechanical failures and accidents. We urge the NRC to consider the risks associated with operating an outdated facility and to 8/14/24, 6:27 AM blob:https://www.fdms.gov/1a15869f-5e84-4ad2-af15-e5a6f6aef396 blob:https://www.fdms.gov/1a15869f-5e84-4ad2-af15-e5a6f6aef396 1/2 SUNSI Review Complete Template=ADM-013 E-RIDS=ADM-03 ADD: Ngola Otto; Marlayna Doell; Justin Poole Mary Neely Comment (1)

prioritize the safety of the surrounding communities.
- 3. Environmental Impact:**
The potential environmental impact of restarting the Palisades reactor cannot be overlooked. The plant's proximity to Lake Michigan poses a significant risk to the water supply for millions of people. Any accidental release of radioactive materials could have devastating effects on the ecosystem and public health. We call on the NRC to conduct a thorough environmental impact assessment before making any decisions regarding the restart.
- 4. Emergency Preparedness:**
The ability of local and state authorities to respond effectively to a nuclear emergency at the Palisades plant is a critical concern. We urge the NRC to ensure that comprehensive emergency preparedness plans are in place and that local communities are adequately informed and prepared for potential emergencies.
- 5. Alternative Energy Solutions:**
We believe that investing in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures is a safer and more sustainable approach to meeting our energy needs. The restart of the Palisades reactor diverts resources and attention away from the development of clean energy alternatives that can provide long-term benefits without the associated risks of nuclear power.
In conclusion, the American Nuclear Activist Alliance strongly opposes the restart of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant. We urge the NRC to prioritize public safety, environmental protection, and the development of sustainable energy solutions. We call on the NRC to deny the restart application and to focus on decommissi 8/14/24, 6:27 AM blob:https://www.fdms.gov/1a15869f-5e84-4ad2-af15-e5a6f6aef396 blob:https://www.fdms.gov/1a15869f-5e84-4ad2-af15-e5a6f6aef396 2/2
