Subject:

Update on Fermi 1 Return to Passive SAFSTOR Status In Reference 2, Detroit Edison notified the NRC of the plan to return the Fermi 1 facility to a passive monitoring SAFSTOR status per 10 CFR 50.82(a)(7). Reference 2 included a list of eight major activities that were planned to be accomplished prior to returning to passive monitoring SAFSTOR status. Reference 2 also stated that Detroit Edison would inform the NRC if any of the listed activities would not be completed prior to return to passive SAFSTOR.

The physical work has been completed to return the facility to a monitoring condition; however, the following activity listed in Reference 2 is not completed yet:

  • Shipping the majority of accumulated low level radioactive waste to a disposal site Since the physical work of equipment removal and remediation within the scope of the return to passive SAFSTOR plan is complete, Detroit Edison plans to proceed with implementation of the administrative changes for entering the passive monitoring status.
