SUBJECT:

Indian Point Unit Nos. 1 and 2 Notification of Emergency Response Data System Unavailability.

REFERENCE:

Dear Sir:

In accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50 Appendix E. VI.3.b., this letter provides notification that the Indian Point Unit No. 2 Nuclear Plant Emergency Response Data System (ERDS) is scheduled to be removed from service on or about May 6, 2002 and returned to service on or about May 16, 2002. This removal from service is due to the Indian Point Unit No. 2 plant process computer replacement.

This information was communicated to Mr. John Jolicoeur of your staff by Mr. T. R.

Jones, Sr. Engineer, Nuclear Safety and Licensing during a telephone conversation on March 27, 2002.

The Indian Point Unit No. 2 Nuclear Plant process computer system is being replaced.

The determination was made that changes in the computer software protocol are necessary. Replacement of the plant process computer however, will not change the transmitted data points contained in the ERDS Data point Library. Accordingly, a follow up written notification is not required following completion of the modification.

When ERDS becomes inoperable, we will be submitting an 8-hour non-emergency report in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.72. There is no corresponding requirement contained in 10 CFR 50.73 so a follow-up event report is not required.

See page 2 to9>~

NL-02-049 Page 2 of 2 Testing of the computer system and ERDS will take place following replacement of the computer system and prior to determination of system operability.

Should you or your staff have any questions, please contact Mr. John McCann, Manager, Nuclear Safety & Licensing, 914-734-5074.

There are no commitments contained in this letter.

Sincerely, Fred Dacimo Vice President - Operations Indian Point 2 cc:
